  13. What version of palatino.sty are you using?  The version I
  14. have uses the "fontname-1.6" short names, which would
  15. generate "pplr" "ppli" etc.  There is no indication of
  16. full names such as "Palatino".

  18. If you want to use such names, and it would be highly desirable
  19. if only the wretched incompetence built into Intel-dependent
  20. operating systems could be avoided, texfonts.map ought to provide
  21. a completely permissive approach.

  23. I have not seen a texfonts.map that offers anything but entirely
  24. permissive aliases for the LaTeX circle fonts, but I would
  25. suppose that it ought to contain something like the following:

  27. pplr    Palatino
  28. pplr    Palatino-Roman
  29. pplr    Palatino-Regular
  30.  
  31. Palatino-Regular    pplr
  32. Palatino-Roman    pplr
  33. Palatino    pplr
  34.  
  35. which ought to give you a pretty complete set of aliases.

  37. I don't know which issues of Palatino use plain "Palatino"
  38. as the PostScript FontName, which is what is really at issue here.
  39. I don't think any standard ones do.

  41. But it shouldn't matter.  If you have a thorough set of aliases,
  42. any of the above should work.

  44. I still wonder where you got a "palatino.sty" that refers to
  45. {Palatino} rather than {ppl}.  Even more curious, how is it
  46. prevented from asking for "Palatinor" which would get you nowhere.

  48. Have you tried caching texfonts.map somewhere where the path seraching
  49. can't get at it? If that's what's at fault, the raw palatino.sty
  50. protected from any reference to "texfonts.map" may get you just what you need.
